Born in Reinbek in 1972, Sylvia Mechsner grew up near Hamburg. After graduating from high school in 1991, she did a free social year in Berlin and began studying human medicine at the Free University of Berlin in 1992. After completing her Physikum, she wrote her dissertation at the Institute for Biochemistry at the Free University of Berlin. In 2001 Mechsner completed her specialist training.
She has been employed at the Clinic for Gynecology, Charité, since 2001, where she currently works as a senior physician at the Virchow-Klinikum campus. She has headed the Charité’s endometriosis research laboratory since 2005, and the endometriosis center since 2014.
In 2010 she completed her habilitation in the field of endometriosis on the subject of “Endometriosis, the misunderstood gynecological problem — investigations into the pathogenesis and development of pain”. In 2019 she was appointed professor for endometriosis research.
Prof. Dr. Mechsner leads many research projects and clinical studies on the pathogenesis and pain mechanisms of endometriosis. She published a book on this subject in 2021:
“Endometriose — Die unterschätzte Krankheit: Diagnose, Behandlung und was Sie selbst tun können” (ISBN-10 3965841610).
Sylvia Mechsner is married and has three children.
